Forest School Pack 2016

Forest Schools at Hollies Day Nurseries

Forest Schools believes that children have the right to play and access the outdoors and the vibrant reality of our natural world.  Hollies support this ethos by having its own Forest School, lead by two fully qualified Forest School Practitioners. This enables us to provide our children with the opportunity to explore their surroundings and the natural world with experienced and qualified practitioners who already know and understand the children.

Our Forest School Sessions

We have two sites that we regular use for our Forest School sessions, one at Bestwood Country Park and the other at Blackwoods Scouts grounds on Hucknall Rd. We also use public open spaces for sessions such as Woodthorpe Grange Park and Pirate Park on Mansfield Rd. We run the session in a morning or afternon session, if your child’s attendance on one of these sessions they will be taken along at no extra cost to enjoy the session, the sessions change at diffrent times of the year please ask for more details. If your child does not attend these sessions you can speak to a member of the management team to book your child in for an extra afternoon. Parents are always welcome to join us. Forest School sessions run term time only and follow the Nottingham City term timetable.

What Happens at a Forest School Session?

Sessions start with the Hollie-bus picking the children an staff up from each nursery, the sites are a short journey from the nursery. The session will then start with an introduction to the week’s theme or a recap of last week’s activities, followed by a game that reiterates the safety rules of Forest School. The children will have a morning snack or tea at the site, which will often be cooked on the fire made by the practitioners. This helps the children to refuel and keep going throughout the active session.

To stay true to the ethos of Forest Schools, practitioners will focus more on the process of learning, rather than the learning outcomes. The sessions will allow children to explore the environment at their own pace and take the lead of their learning. At the end of each session the children will come together to reflect on what they have been doing, enabling the leaders to plan for the following week.

Appropriate Clothing

This is one of the most important aspects to Forest Schools.

We will not be able to take any child to a Forest School session if they are inappropriately dressed.

Forest School sessions will take place come rain or shine and the children will be experiencing a mixture of terrains. Therefore it is vital that your child has appropriate clothing during this experience. Please follow the below guidelines.

  • No sandals or open toe shoes. Children need to wear a good pair of boots or wellingtons (please remember wellingtons do not keep their feet warm in winter).
  • Trousers are to be worn at all times (no bare legs). If it is a hot day, please put trousers in a bag and we will change them for the session.
  • Please label all clothing with your child’s name.

In Autumn and Winter the weather can get very wet and cold, please ensure your child has warm clothes on including a jumper, a waterproof coat, appropriate boots to keep the feet warm, no wellingtons, hat and gloves. Hollies will also provide all in one waterproof to go over their clothes.

In Spring & Summer a sun hat is to be worn on all outings. Practitioners will ensure that children have a sunscreen applied, the nursery  provides Boots sultan kid’s sun care lotion SPF 50+ .If your child is allergic to our choice of sun cream, we ask that you provide your own.
